Through Do For One, you may have the opportunity to be thoughtfully matched in a one-to-one supportive relationship with an isolated adult who has a disability.
We're looking for everyday New Yorkers who want to become a freely given, enduring friend and supportive neighbor (called an Advocate).
No prior experience is required. More importantly, we look for people with good interpersonal skills, good judgment, reliability, and a genuine desire to build a meaningful friendship.
Please note that expressing interest does not guarantee a match. Because our relationships are intended to be long-term, we look for people who plan to remain in the NYC area for the foreseeable future.
Many of the people we serve cannot name a single person who isn't paid to spend time with them. At Do For One, we believe that there is simply no substitute for freely-given and mutually beneficial relationships motivated by love. When people build relationships across societal barriers, everyone benefits.
What to Expect:
- We serve adults (18+) with disabilities living throughout NYC, including in group homes, nursing homes, assisted living, with family, or on their own.
- Once matched, you'll schedule time together directly with your match, deciding on where you'll meet and what you'd like to do together.
- We ask Advocates to meet with their match at least once a month, with the hope of building a long lasting supportive relationship.
How to Apply
- Express your interest through this page and a staff will be in touch with you within 2 days.
- Meet with a staff member over Zoom (20–30 minutes) to share about yourself and learn about our matchmaking process.
- Attend a required orientation in Midtown Manhattan to learn about Do For One's history, mission, and values.
Our vetting and matchmaking process is thoughtful, collaborative, and takes time to ensure each relationship has the best chance to flourish.
