Tutor Kids Through a Summer Squash Program

About this Opportunity

StreetSquash’s mission is to provide consistent, long-term, and reliable support to the children, families, and schools in Harlem. By exposing students to a broad range of experiences and by maintaining the highest standards, StreetSquash helps all participants realize their academic, athletic, and personal potential.

Are you motivated, high energy, patient, and committed to making a difference in the lives of young people? Then StreetSquash is the place for you! From the squash court to the classroom, we are excited to welcome you to our program!

This summer (July 6 - August 14), we offer three volunteer opportunities. You have the option to volunteer in one or more of these capacities:

  • Academic Tutoring: Through a 90-minute guided session with academic staff members, tutors will work with elementary and middle school aged students to increase their reading and writing levels through interactive activities such as comprehension questions, class discussions, and writing prompts. Volunteers will work in small groups of 2-3 students at a time. (Tutoring shifts take place Monday - Wednesday between 10am and 3:30pm)
  • Volunteer Squash Assistants: Under the guidance of StreetSquash coaches, volunteer squash assistants conduct drills on the courts in 90-minute sessions and offer tips and coaching to students as needed. Volunteers usually work with groups of 3 to 5 students at a time. Squash volunteer assistants should have prior experience playing squash. (Squash shifts take place Monday - Wednesday between 10am and 3:30pm)
  • Field Trip Chaperones: Volunteers must be at least 18 or older to act as a field trip chaperone. Chaperones along with StreetSquash staff members will be accompanying students to field trips around New York City. Chaperones should be prepared to travel with students on public transit to and from the field trip destination. Itineraries will be provided for all trips 1 week in advance of departure. (Swim / Park Day - Thursdays from 10am to 3:30pm | Field Trips - Fridays from 10am-3:30pm). **Volunteers must be available for the entire day to be a field trip chaperone.**

Requirements:

  • All volunteers must be at least 15 years old at the start of Summer Discovery. We ask that all applicants commit to a minimum of 6 hours of summer volunteering. Volunteers must also submit an updated resume and an updated physical from their doctor. Volunteers cannot begin volunteering until all documents are submitted.

Location: In-person at the StreetSquash facility, 41 West 115th Street, New York, New York 10026.

Benefits to Volunteer: By sharing your presence and knowledge, you will make a life-long impact on a student by helping them have success in school, which will open up educational and professional opportunities for them.
